My favorite time of the year
Every year I look forward to December. Not particularly because of the expectation of waking up Christmas morning and opening gifts. I buy myself gifts the time! I don't enjoy the shopping, crowds, and the feeding frenzy on the sales, but I do enjoy the crisp morning air, quiet cloudless nights full of stars, and the lights that decorate the streets in my city of Astoria NY.
I have incredibly fond memories of being in our family home, up on Mount Hood in Oregon. One memory sticks out in particular. I was probably 15 or 16 years old, and I couldn't sleep. I crept downstairs into our living room and peered out the window, over the back of the sofa. It had been snowing all day and snow had accumulated in drifts around the railing of our house. The lights on the sidewall of our house illuminated the snow as it was slowly falling. Behind me in the 6 foot tall stone hearth fireplace the embers of that evenings fire still glowed. The house was completely silent as everyone else was asleep, and I remember staring out the window my chin resting on my hands, just watching the snow fall. It is one of the most peaceful and joyful memories I can remember.
December is also the time when most people just generally seem to be on their best behavior. Everyone seems a little bit nicer, everyone seems to smile a little bit more, and there's just generally a feeling of well..... Goodwill in the air. For those of you in New York City you know that can be a challenge. Every year starting in December I like to go out to a bar in the West Village, early on in the evening, and just enjoy a cocktail and listen to the piano man play Christmas music, see the lights of the city, the people, and just generally get soaked up in the holiday spirit.
Only once in my life have I had the great good fortune to be able to spend Christmas with a partner. Most of those Christmases I've spent them with friends and family being I was single. All of those memories are pretty incredible, but none will top that childhood memory of sitting on the back of the sofa, staring out the window, watching the snow fall, and being completely and utterly happy.
Find your memory and bring it to the front of your mind this holiday season. Relive that feeling of happiness and joy, whether you're alone, or with your partner or your husband or wife, everyone has that one perfect Christmas to remember. if you can't find it, create it.
Happy holidays
